Donald Trump has said that he will "unite the country". Before you laugh or snarl, consider that there is a chance he might be right. He might just unite this country - AGAINST HIM!
You see, while Donald Trump has disparaged many blacks, Muslims and Hispanics, and while he has brought extreme racists like Steve Bannon and Jeff Sessions into his Administration, he didn't invent racism. We have been fighting it for a long time. We will most likely have to fight it, even if Trump is somehow removed from office. If we are honest, we sometimes even fight it in ourselves. How many of us can say we have never stereotyped someone because of their race?
But the thing about fighting together for the same cause and working side-by-side is, we start to see each other as part of the same team. You work, worship or march alongside someone, and you start to see them as a PERSON, rather than merely as a member of a different race. (I say "merely" because race is an important part of who we are.) We can also start to truly value our diversity as persons, when we see what persons of another race bring to the table.
So, since we find ourselves with a "lemon" of an administration, let's use it to make lemonade. Let's use this opportunity to know people of other races, and in the process work on our own racism as well. What do the rest of you think?
